Medical Toxicology Branch
Employment as a staff toxicologist in the
Medical Toxicology Branch has permitted me to
meld together my interests in both toxicology
and public health. This interest in the two disciplines
was fostered by doing environmental survey work
as an undergraduate and serving as a Peace Corps
volunteer in tuberculosis treatment programs overseas.
After stints as an inhalation toxicologist in
a contract lab and as a researcher in neuro- and
pulmonary toxicology in academic and industrial
labs, work responsibilities for the Medical Toxicology
Branch have given me the opportunity to apply
my experience in a personally fulfilling manner.
Pesticides as economic poisons have a useful role
in the agricultural industry for the control of
a myriad of pests. The challenge of the work stems
from the recognition of the toxicity hazards inherent
in the use of these chemicals and how to minimize
the risks in their usage. A substantial part of
the work related satisfaction which I enjoy arises
from the professional interactions I have with
other staff in the department and in the agency.
