DPR registered 21 new pesticide active ingredients in 2004. They included seven designated as reduced-risk chemicals. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency uses the "reduced-risk" designation to highlight pesticides that offer less toxicity, allow lower application rates, or possess other desirable qualities in comparison to traditional chemicals. California currently has about 900 registered pesticide active ingredients used in approximately 11,000 pesticide products.
