NOTICE OF FINAL DECISION CONCERNING REEVALUATION OF PESTICIDE PRODUCTS The Director of the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) files this notice with the Secretary of the Resources Agency for posting pursuant to Title 3, California Code of Regulations (CCR), Articles 8 and 12. CCR requires the Secretary of the Resources Agencyand DPR to post this notice for 30 days for public inspection. REEVALUATION DPR placed all pesticide products containing chlorpyrifos and labeled for indoor home use into reevaluation on June 27, 1985. Chlorpyrifos is an insecticide that that is commonly used in and around the home. BASIS OF REEVALUATION DPR initiated the reevaluation of chlorpyrifos at the request of the Department of Health Services (DHS). DHS's request was based on a May 17, 1985 study entitled An Assessment of the Hazard from Pesticide Absorption from Surfaces. SUMMARY OF REEVALUATION In 1987, in response to the reevaluation, the basic manufacturer of chlorpyrifos submitted the results of indoor exposure studies. The studies were reviewed and did not raise any immediate concerns. In May 1998, DPR initiated the risk assessment process for all pesticide products containing the active ingredient chlorpyrifos, including those used in residential homes. On January 20, 2000, DPR issued a notice to registrants identifying the definitive toxicity and exposure studies, and critical endpoints/no effect levels being used in the chlorpyrifos risk assessment. DPR expects to complete its risk assessment of chlorpyrifos in the fourth quarter of 2000. On June 8, 2000, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) announced that the manufacturers of chlorpyrifos voluntarily agreed to eliminate all residential uses of chlorpyrifos, except use in containerized baits. Under the agreement, registrants will no longer sell products containing chlorpyrifos, except containerized baits, for indoor residential use after February 1, 2001. All sales of indoor use chlorpyrifos products, except containerized baits, will cease December 31, 2001. FINAL REEVALUATION DECISION The agreement between U.S. EPA and chlorpyrifos manufacturers eliminates all sales of chlorpyrifos products for use indoors in residential areas, except containerized baits, by December 31, 2001. Under this agreement, residential exposure to chlorpyrifos residues will be virtually eliminated. Therefore, DPR concludes this reevaluation.
