Back to Exposure Assessment & Mitigation Program
Exposure Assessment and Mitigation scientists determine which human populations
may be exposed to pesticides and estimate those exposures.
Populations of concern include individuals who come in
contact with pesticides through the direct handling of
pesticides, those entering pesticide treated areas, and
bystanders or individuals who may indirectly come in contact
with pesticides through ambient air, groundwater, or other
sources. The exposure analysis includes occupational,
residential, industrial, and institutional scenarios.
In addition, EAMP scientists develop exposure reduction
methods when the assessments indicate unacceptable risks,
review new and amended pesticide product labels, review
proposals for research on developmental pesticides, recommend
regulatory decisions on exposure significance issues,
and review exposure studies involving human participants.
Within the Worker Health and Safety Branch, scientists
from the Pesticide Illness Surveillance, Industrial Hygiene,
and Exposure Monitoring programs, assist EAMP scientists
in identifying and reporting exposure incidents, studying
crop cultivation practices, and assessing exposure potential.
