1996 Monitoring Program


USDA has a cooperative agreement with DPR and CDFA to sample selected commodities and analyze them for pesticide residues. California is one of ten states involved in this national project; together, these states represent approximately 50 percent of the nation's consumers.

The purpose of this USDA program is to provide U.S. EPA with residue data to be combined with survey data on pesticide use as the basis for realistic risk assessments and for review of pesticide tolerances. During 1996, DPR collected random samples of apples (fresh and juice), carrots, grapes, green beans (canned and frozen), oranges, peaches, spinach, sweet corn, sweet peas, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes throughout California. These samples were analyzed at CDFA laboratories for residues of certain pesticides targeted by USDA. In 1996, there were 1,123 samples collected at 420 sites throughout the state for the USDA program. Results of the USDA monitoring are not included in this report as the specialized nature of the sampling and the analytical program differ from those used by DPR in its routine marketplace surveillance sampling.
