DPR initiated this reevaluation based upon review of an eye irritation study for a product containing 60 percent
pine oil. Review of the data indicated that the product was Toxicity Category I for eye irritation, and therefore,
should bear the signal word "Danger" and appropriate precautionary language. A search of the database
found that a number of registered products containing 60 percent pine oil bore the signal word "Caution."
Available data were insufficient to determine whether the signal words of products containing pine oil were adequate
to mitigate possible hazards during use.
Pursuant to the reevaluation, registrants of pesticide products containing pine oil were required to submit
eye irritation data showing that the signal word and precautionary language currently on the label of their products
were appropriate. Data submitted for some of the products indicated that the signal word and precautionary language
on the labels of the products were adequate to mitigate possible eye irritation hazards. However, data submitted
for other products indicated that the signal word and precautionary language on the labels of those products were
inadequate to mitigate possible eye irritation hazards. The registrants of products with inadequate labeling chose
to either withdraw the registrations of their products or amend the labels of their products to mitigate the possible
eye irritation hazard. Amendments to the labels of pesticide products must first be accepted by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency before they can be submitted to DPR for approval.
DPR has determined that the signal word and precautionary statements on the labels of currently registered pesticide
products containing pine oil are adequate to mitigate possible eye irritation hazards. Therefore, the reevaluation
of products containing pine oil is hereby concluded.
