Table 1. Analysis of the Marketplace Surveillance Program Commodity Samples
The number of samples collected in the Marketplace Surveillance Program is displayed by commodity. Samples are grouped in the following:
- Commodity (list of all commodities with samples taken in this program)
- Total (total number of samples collected per commodity)
- Residues Detected (total number of samples with legal residues detected within tolerance for each commodity)
- Percent % (residues detected divided by the Total x 100)
- Illegal Residues Detected (total number of samples with illegal residues detected [residue exceeds Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations (40CFR) tolerance and residue tolerance not established])
- Percent % (illegal residues detected divided by the Total x 100)
- No Residues Detected (total number of samples with no residues detected)

The number of samples collected and the total number of pesticides analyzed for each sample collected is displayed by commodity. Various commodities sampled in the Marketplace Surveillance Program are listed by residue levels as a percentage of the established tolerance level. The "illegal residue" category includes both samples over the tolerance level and those for which no tolerance is established.
- Commodity (list of all commodities with samples collected in 1996)
- Number of Samples (total number of samples collected per commodity)
- Total (total number of pesticides analyzed for each sample collected. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) multi-residue procedure extracts more than 200 chemicals. Using Gas Chromatographs equipped with Flame Photometric Detectors, Electron Capture Detectors, OI Detectors and Liquid Chromatographs in Post Column Derivitization Mode equipped with Fluorescent Detectors can detect 144 of these compounds. In order to detect all 200 compounds, additional Gas Chromatographs equipped with Mass Selective Detectors and Nitrogen Phosphorus Detectors have to be used)
- Pesticides Detected (total number of residues detected for each commodity)
- Residues as a Percentage of Tolerance (the breakdown of residues as a percentage of tolerance)
- Illegal Residues Detected total number of illegal residues detected [residue exceeds 40CFR tolerance and residue tolerance not established])

This report lists the number of samples collected in the area where the commodity was grown. Samples are grouped in the following:
- Origin (the area where the commodity was grown)
- Number of Samples Total (total samples collected in the area where the commodity was grown)
- Samples with residues detected (total number of samples with legal residues detected within tolerance for each commodity)
- Percent % (residues detected divided by the total for each commodity x 100)
- Total Illegal (total number illegal residues detected)
- Percent % (total number of illegal residues detected divided by the total x 100)
- Residue tolerance not established (illegal residue of a chemical that is not registered for use on the commodity and for which there is no tolerance)
- Percent % (total number of residues where there were not tolerances established divided by the total x 100)
- Residue exceeds tolerance (illegal residue which exceeds the tolerance established by U.S. EPA and published in 40CFR)
- Percent % (total number of residue where the residue amount is greater than the tolerance amount, divided by the total x 100)

- No Tolerance Established (illegal residue of a chemical that is not registered for use on the commodity and for which there is no tolerance)
- Residue exceeds tolerance (illegal residue which exceeds the tolerance established by U.S. EPA and published in 40CFR)

- Commodity (list of all commodities with samples collected in 1996)
- Total (total number of samples collected per commodity)
- Residues Detected (total number of legal residues detected within the tolerance for each commodity)
- Percent % (residues detected divided by the Total x 100)
- Illegal Residues Detected (total number of illegal residues detected [residues detected but no tolerance established and residues which exceed tolerance])
- Percent % (illegal residues detected divided by the Total x 100)
- No Residues Detected (total number of samples with no residues detected)
