Welcome to the Department of Pesticide Regulation

2010 Field Fumigant Labels

Back to Fumigant Resource Center

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is requiring new safety measures for soil fumigant pesticides to increase protections for agricultural workers and bystanders - people who live, work, or otherwise spend time near fields that are fumigated. These measures apply to pesticide products containing the following active ingredients:

  • chloropicrin
  • dazomet
  • metam sodium/potassium (including methyl isothiocyanate or MITC)
  • methyl bromide

(Labels for products containing 1,3-dichlorpropene as the sole active ingredient were not revised.)

According to U.S. EPA’s schedule, registrants must end sale and distribution of products bearing old labels no later than November 30, 2010. After that date, registrants can only sell and distribute products bearing new labels.

In December 2010, DPR registered products containing methyl iodide for the first time. Its labels are similar to the revised labels for the other fumigants, and are included below.

To assist county agricultural commissioners in making plans for permit issuance and enforcement of the new labels, DPR is providing electronic copies of each revised soil fumigant label that has been accepted for sale and use in California. These labels were accepted as of the date indicated and will remain posted until approximately January 31, 2011, or until most labels are available at the use sites. DPR will not update this page if labels are revised; therefore any changes made to the labels after the listed date are not included. Any such changes are likely to be minor until U.S. EPA’s second phase of soil fumigant pesticide label changes which will take place later in 2011. Users and enforcement staff are reminded that the label on the product at the time of use is the one that must be followed.
